Taking screenshots for documentation, bug reports, or social media is a constant privacy minefield. Customer names, email addresses, phone numbers: sensitive data lurks everywhere, and manually redacting it is tedious and error-prone.
CloakAI is a Chrome extension that automatically detects and obfuscates personal information on any web page. Click the button, and all PII gets masked before you take your screenshot.
The backstory
I needed to share screenshots of customer dashboards for support tickets, but couldn't risk exposing real user data. Manual redaction was slow and I kept missing things. AI can spot PII patterns I'd overlook.
How it works
- AI-powered detection using Google Gemini
- Multiple obfuscation styles: blur, redact, pixelate, mask
- Detects names, emails, phones, addresses, financial data, IDs
- Custom rules for domain-specific patterns
- Click-to-select for manual additions
- Privacy-first: falls back to local regex when offline
This isn't a real-time redaction tool. It's slower than competitors by design. The tradeoff is thoroughness. It doesn't just find obvious patterns like email addresses: it understands context and catches things like "the customer John mentioned..." that simple regex would miss. When you need a truly clean screenshot, not just a quick blur, that's what CloakAI is for.
